With the rationale for antimicrobial stewardship in mind, a group of like-minded researchers formed the European Study Group for Antibiotic Policies (ESGAP). ESGAP has gained official recognition from the ESCMID Executive Committee and elected its first executive officers at the 9th ECCMID, 1999, Berlin, Germany. At the ECCMID in Barcelona, ESGAP will be celebrating its 15th anniversary..

ESGAP/ESCMID Antimicrobial Stewardship Learning Community (AS-OVLC) is an open-access web-based resource that has been created to provide information  and tools  to foster antimicrobial stewardship among healthcare professionals. Our mission is to promote better use of antimicrobial through education, measurement and effective implementation..

It has been designed with and educational focus and its aims are to:

  • Provide a learning forum for health care professionals to showcase, disseminate and highlight good practice of antimicrobial use
  • Promote opinion exchanges and debate regarding antimicrobial use, policy and stewardship
  • Facilitate the co-ordination of pragmatic clinical practice surveys of stewardship activity

Our learning material and courses cover a range of outcomes and include the evidence base to support stewardship interventions, models for stewardship programmes across the globe, stewardship in the specific setting and healthcare contexts illustrated with case scenarios, educational interventions and resources, methods to measure effectiveness of interventions,  measuring for improvement, audit, research or scrutiny, the range of implementation strategies and the science behind them [e.g social, psychology, behavioural, improvement, change etc], public awareness, role of politics and media and so on.

We invite to you to interact with the site trough your comments and your participation in the ongoing surveys and debates. In addition, we will be pleased to receive feedback on all those aspects of this Open Virtual Community that can be improved in order to become a useful site for your daily practice within an antimicrobial stewardship program or as an Infectious Disease physician.

Best regards
