Antimicrobial resistance at the highest political level: the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning?

Antimicrobial resistance was discussed at the United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA) held on September 21, 2016. For the first time the leaders of 193 Member States agreed for a coordinated action in the combat against antimicrobial in human and veterinarian medicine, and in agriculture. This was the fourth time after HIV, non-communicable diseases, and Ebola that a health topic was discussed at the UN General Assembly. In some of these other occasions in which health topics were brought to the attention of the #UNGA, significant progress was made in the following years. Let’s hope that it means a real step forward in the fight against antimicrobial resistance! beginning
